This Week's Light: When You Need to Pause and Breathe

A weekly reflection from the Shared Light community

Hey friends,

It's been two weeks since we last sat down to write with you, and I want to be honest about why: I've been struggling. Mentally. The kind of struggle that makes it hard to find words, harder to find motivation, and nearly impossible to keep that positivity tank full.

So we took a break. From writing, from recording, from the usual rhythm. And you know what? That was exactly what we needed.

When the weight gets too heavy

When stress starts piling up for me, motivation becomes this slippery thing. Hard to grab onto, even harder to hold. It's like trying to push a boulder uphill while everything in you just wants to sit down. I get it if you've been there too. It's not weakness, it's just being human on a hard day. Or two weeks, in my case.

Finding safety in the people you love

Here's what I did instead of pushing through: I just existed with my family. Not in some intentional, Instagram worthy way. Just present. Being in the same room. Letting them be my anchor when everything felt like it was shifting.

Our little one has been on quite the journey, and I'm genuinely optimistic we've turned a corner with her. Seeing that progress, being there as it happens, that became my reason to keep going when I didn't have one of my own.

Fortnite squads and unexpected blessings

One of my coping mechanisms these past two weeks? Fortnite. A lot of it, actually. I needed something to quiet my brain, to give my worry mind a different job for a while.

But here's the beautiful part: my oldest has been right there with me, and we've built quite the squad together. We're talking strategy, celebrating wins, laughing at our fails.

Something we both love, something that brings us closer, and I almost missed it because I was too caught up in my head.

The power of showing up together

Dustie's been channeling her stress into baking and cooking. And I mean really going at it. Extra bread, special dishes, the works. And instead of that being just her thing, it's become our thing. We're sharing in the joy of it. The kids have noticed too. They've seen their mom and dad leaning into each other through the heavy stuff, and something shifted in them. They're making more of an effort to engage with us, to be part of what we're building together.

That's when I realized: sometimes the most powerful thing you can do isn't pushing harder. It's just showing up as you are, with the people who matter most.

Here's what I want you to know

It's okay to focus on yourself when things get heavy. It's okay to take a break, to pause, to admit that you don't have it all figured out right now. You don't have to have the answers. You don't have to be "on" all the time.

But, and this is important, you also have to be willing to dust yourself off. To put your head down. To march forward toward a better tomorrow.

Because tomorrow is coming, and you deserve to meet it.

Questions for you:

How do you give yourself permission to rest when you need it? What helps you remember to count your blessings during difficult seasons?

Thank you for understanding when we need to step back, for showing up for your families even on the hardest days, and for being part of a community that values both authenticity and mental health.

Here's to taking breaks without guilt, Fortnite squads, kitchen adventures with the people you love, and the courage to keep moving forward.

With grateful hearts and flour-dusted counters, JR & Dustie
