A weekly reflection from the Shared Light community
Hey friends,
We unintentionally skipped a week, and honestly, we've been a little preoccupied. You see, we have a mama dog who is ready to have puppies any day now, and let me tell you, it's been a full time job keeping her separated, monitoring her health, and just waiting for the big moment. It's the kind of thing that takes over your whole house, your whole routine, your whole mind.
But here's what I've realized in the middle of all this chaos: this is exactly what life is supposed to look like.
The Great Puppy Vigil of 2026

Our dog mama has basically become Woody from Toy Story. Not the cowboy hat and boots part, but the existential crisis part. You know that moment in Toy Story 3 when Woody is lying in the crib, staring at the ceiling, wondering what his purpose is now that Andy's growing up? That's her. Except instead of contemplating life's meaning, she's contemplating the meaning of her swollen belly and why we keep checking on her every thirty minutes.
But here's the real story: Dustie has absolutely stepped up in ways I didn't even expect. While I'm doing my thing, she's become the real MVP of Operation Puppy Watch. Dustie's the one checking on Mama dog constantly, making sure she's comfortable, monitoring her health like she's a veterinary nurse. She's set up the whelping box like it's the most important nursery in the world. She's got the rotation down, the feeding schedule, and the midnight checks. She's all in, and it's been something beautiful to witness.
And then there are our kids. They've both stepped in to help Dustie, each in their own perfect way. Our oldest has been trying to help without getting in the way, asking what she can do and learning that sometimes the best help is knowing when to step back and give Mama Dog space. It's a level of awareness that makes me proud.
Our 10-year-old, though? She's been checking in on mama dog repeatedly throughout the day. She's working alongside Dustie, asking what's needed, offering her presence and her hands. It's like watching the toy gang rally around Woody in Toy Story. They're both there, both present, both understanding that this matters.
There's this beautiful parallel happening that I can't stop thinking about. In Toy Story, all the toys come together to help Woody. They check on him. They make sure he's okay. That's what's happening in our house right now. Dustie's leading the charge, our 10-year-old is right there with her, checking in throughout the day, and our oldest is learning what it looks like to help with intention and awareness. It's this quiet, consistent, beautiful act of showing up for something that matters.
Stress looks different these days

Outside of Operation Puppy Watch, we're still navigating some stress. Work stuff, family stuff, and the regular weight that comes with being an adult building a life. But here's the difference now: we're being intentional about how we handle it together.
Instead of letting stress scatter us in different directions, we're leaning into each other. We're having conversations that matter. Real ones. The kind where you're sitting around the kitchen table or on the back porch, and suddenly you're talking about hopes and fears and what matters most.
The kids are noticing what it looks like when we choose each other. They're more present. They're more engaged. More willing to just be with us instead of disappearing into their own worlds. And watching both of them respond to this mama dog situation, watching them step into this with Dustie in their own ways, that's them learning what it means to be part of a family that's going through something together. That's them understanding that we all have different roles, and sometimes your role is just to show up and check in and say, "How can I help?"
This is what ordinary looks like

You know what I kept thinking about this week? How ordinary all of this is. Waiting for a dog to have puppies. Managing stress. Trying to be intentional with family time. Having conversations. Playing Fortnite together. Baking bread in the kitchen. Making sure the kids feel seen and heard.
This is it. This is what people mean when they talk about life being precious. It's not the big moments or the Instagram-worthy stuff. It's the waiting. It's the showing up. It's the choosing each other day after day, even when things get heavy.
Life is really just about leaning into the people you love and creating intentional moments together. That's the whole thing. That's the podcast we're talking about this week, and that's the reminder I needed right in the middle of the puppy chaos.
The gift in the watching
So we've got a mama dog who's about to become a mom. We've got stress that's real and present but manageable. And we've got a family where Dustie is leading the charge, both kids are stepping up to help in their own ways, and together they're showing up for something that matters.
That's the real magic right there. Not the waiting for the puppies. It's watching your wife pour herself into this. It's watching your kids recognize what needs to happen and step up. It's watching them work together like the toy gang rallying around Woody. It's seeing everyone bring exactly what they have to offer in this moment.
The puppies will come. The stress will shift to whatever's next. But this right here, watching Dustie and both kids move through this together, each contributing what only they can contribute, this is what we're holding onto.
And if you're waiting for your own "puppies" in whatever form that takes, know that you're exactly where you need to be. The waiting is part of the gift.
Questions for you:
What does ordinary look like in your life right now? How do you create intentional moments with the people you love when stress is pressing in?
Thank you for sticking with us through the skipped weeks, for stepping up when your family needs you most, and for being part of a community that understands that real life is found in the everyday.
Here's to mama dogs and new beginnings, families that rally together like the toy gang, checking in on each other, and the beautiful ordinary moments that make life actually
matter.
