This Week's Light: The Art of the Reset (And Why We're Two Days Late)

A weekly reflection from the Shared Light community

Hello there,

So here we are, two days behind schedule, and honestly? That pretty much sums up this entire week. Sometimes life moves so fast that even your weekly check-ins need to catch their breath.

The Week That Wouldn't Quit

The first half of this week hit us like a freight train picking up speed. Coming off the high of our anniversary celebration, reality decided to remind us that regular life was still waiting. Between work demands, school deadlines, and the general chaos that seems to follow us around, we were running on fumes and caffeine by Wednesday.

That's when I made a decision that felt both spontaneous and absolutely necessary: I took a couple days off work. Not for anything fancy or planned – just to hit the pause button and spend some intentional time with Dustie and the kids.

The False Alarm That Aged Us Five Years

Remember our lice adventure from a couple weeks ago? Well, this week we got to experience the sequel nobody asked for – another lice scare. Cue the immediate panic, the frantic hair inspections, and that sinking feeling in your stomach when you think you're about to relive your worst parenting nightmare.

Thankfully, it was a false alarm. But man, those few hours of uncertainty reminded us how quickly your day can pivot from normal to "burn everything and start over."

When One Goes Down

Of course, because life has a sense of humor, our oldest decided this was the perfect week to get sick. Nothing serious, just enough to throw off everyone's rhythm and add another layer of "let's just survive this" to our daily routine. There's something about a sick kid that makes you realize how much your family operates as a unit – when one person is down, everyone feels it.

Dustie's Doctor Visit

Dustie had a doctor's appointment this week, one of those routine check-ins that somehow always manages to create more questions than answers. It's funny how medical appointments can simultaneously be completely normal and slightly anxiety-inducing. Everything turned out fine, but it's another reminder that taking care of ourselves isn't optional – it's essential.

The Great Internet Line Battle of 2026

Here's a sentence I never thought I'd write: we spent most of this week in an ongoing war with our dogs over our new internet line. Apparently, our furry family members have decided that the freshly installed cable looks like the world's most expensive chew toy.

Every day became a new strategy session on how to protect our connection to the outside world from our own pets.

It's the kind of problem that's simultaneously hilarious and infuriating, especially when you're trying to work from home and your internet keeps cutting out because someone's four-legged child thinks fiber optic cables are delicious.

Weekend Reset Mode

Once my mini-vacation officially started, everything shifted. The weekend became about one thing: resetting. We cleaned out the garage so Dustie can start her workout routine again – there's something satisfying about creating space for new habits and fresh starts. We played entirely too much Fortnite as a family, which has become our weird bonding activity that somehow works perfectly for us.

Most importantly, we just spent time together without the pressure of being anywhere else or doing anything productive. Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is absolutely nothing together.

The December Countdown

Through all of this, I'm still juggling school assignments and trying to stay on track for December graduation. It's wild how life keeps moving forward even when you feel like you're barely keeping up. Every assignment completed feels like a small victory, every deadline met feels like proof that somehow, someway, we're making it work.

What We're Learning About Rhythm

This week reminded us that life isn't about maintaining perfect momentum – it's about knowing when to push forward and when to pull back. The first half of the week demanded everything we had. The second half required us to be intentional about rest and connection.

We're learning that reset isn't a luxury; it's a necessity. That taking time off work to be present with your family isn't falling behind – it's investing in what matters most. That sometimes the best weeks are the ones where you accomplish less but connect more.

The Beautiful Chaos of It All

False lice alarms, sick kids, internet-eating dogs, garage cleaning, and family Fortnite tournaments – this week was a masterclass in rolling with whatever comes your way. It wasn't the week we planned, but it was exactly the week we needed.

We're two days late with this reflection because we were too busy living the life we're reflecting on. And honestly? That feels exactly right.

What does reset look like for you? How do you find balance when life gets hectic?

Thanks for being patient with our late post and for continuing to show up for these weekly check-ins, even when we're a little behind schedule. Life is beautifully messy, and we're grateful to share both the chaos and the calm with you.

Here's to finding rhythm in the madness, JR & Dustie
